📖 Server Rules

📌 Account Responsibility

You are responsible for your own account. If you break any of the rules listed below, you will also be responsible for any resulting punishments. If you believe a punishment was unfair, you may appeal at mctowny.com/discord.

🛡️ General Rules (Apply to All Servers)

  1. Follow Staff Instructions
If a staff member asks you to stop a topic, leave an area, or adjust your behavior, you are expected to comply. If you believe the request is unfair, create a ticket in our Discord and Management will investigate.
  2. No Harassment
Harassing other players is not allowed. This includes stalking, griefing near towns, false reporting, targeting vulnerable players, or any behavior considered physical or social harassment.
  3. Preserve the Overworld
Do not create eyesores in any Overworld. This includes lava casts, cobble monsters, mass fires, large craters, or widespread terrain destruction. These actions are only allowed in resource worlds.
  4. No Unfair Gameplay Advantages
Using cheats such as auto-clickers, x-ray, baritone, fly/killaura hacks, or taping keys is prohibited. Refer to our Allowed Mods list. If you’re unsure, ask a staff member or open a ticket.
  5. No Scamming
Scamming other players of in-game currency or items is not allowed. This includes misleading sales, deceptive renaming, price manipulation, or breaking agreed trades. Only trades involving in-game value are enforceable.
  6. No Traps
Do not create traps for unsuspecting players. This includes teleporting players into PvP zones, lava, falls, or redstone traps with malicious intent.
  7. Keep Content Appropriate
Skins, usernames, and builds must be free of NSFW content, drug references, gore, or offensive symbols/messages.
  8. Alt Account Limits
Players are allowed up to two Java accounts. If you share a home/IP with another player, please notify staff via a Discord ticket in advance.
  9. No Punishment Evasion
Using alternate accounts to bypass mutes, bans, or any punishment is not allowed.
  10. Malicious Intent is Not Tolerated
Any attempt to harm the server or its players—such as spreading hate, advertising other servers, doxxing, exploiting bugs, or crashing the server—will result in severe punishment without warning.

🏘️ Towny Rules

  1. Respect Town Borders
If you’re outlawed from a town or asked to leave a plot, you must leave immediately and stay at least 100 blocks away.
  2. Warp Permissions
Do not set warps in other towns without clear, documented permission. If permission is revoked, the warp must be removed. Warps without permission must be placed at least 100 blocks away from the town.
  3. No Abuse of Town Permissions
Do not exploit town roles to steal or sabotage. This includes draining bank funds, griefing, kicking players unfairly, or misusing permissions granted in error.
  4. No Griefing or Interference
Do not disrupt town expansion or aesthetics. This includes ring-claiming, destroying structures without permission, and placing grief structures like lava pyramids or walls.
  5. No Unsolicited Town Invites
Don’t spam invites to players without speaking to them first. Always ask before sending an invite and respect their decision.
  6. Town-Specific Rules
Towns may create their own internal rules, as long as they do not conflict with official MC Towny rules. If a player breaks a town-only rule, it is not enforceable by staff unless it also violates a global rule.

💬 Chat Rules (Apply Across All Servers)

  1. No Spam or Chat Disruption
Avoid repeating messages, flooding chat, spamming characters, excessive caps, stretched text, or using unusual fonts.
  2. English Only in General Chat

  3. No Punishment Talk
Avoid discussing your or others’ active or past punishments in public chat or Discord.
  4. No Promotional Auctions
Do not auction renamed items to advertise your town, warp, or services. Applies to both /ah and chat auctions.

Only MCT-related content may be promoted. This includes streams or MCT Discords. Personal content unrelated to MCT is not allowed. (MCT = MC Towny)
  6. No NSFW or Inappropriate Topics
Avoid discussing explicit content, hard drugs, substance abuse, gore, or anything unsuitable for a general Minecraft audience.
  7. No Harassment in Chat
Do not bully others or continue messaging someone after being asked to stop.
  8. No Insults or Name-Calling
Avoid cursing at others or making rude remarks. If you’re joking with friends, do it in private DMs to avoid confusion.
  9. No Political Topics
Discussions about politics including voting or beliefs, are not allowed to keep chat peaceful and inclusive.
  10. No Staff Impersonation

  11. No Discrimination
Any racist, sexist, or otherwise discriminatory comments will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  12. No Mute Evasion
Bypassing mutes through signs, books, renamed items, or alt accounts is not allowed.

Note: Rules 1–9 are not enforced in private messages unless reported. However, rules 10 and 11 apply everywhere, and violations will be punished regardless of reports.

Off-Platform Harassment
Targeting a player through rumors, misinformation, or attempts to isolate them due to outside issues will result in punishment. Don’t use off-platform issues as a reason to exclude or mistreat someone on MC Towny. If there’s a rule violation, report it—don’t gossip.

🔎 Find a Town

🏘️ Looking for a Town to Join?

Whether you’re new to the server or just looking for a fresh start, here are a few ways you can find the perfect town for you:

Option 1: Browse Open Towns Manually

Command: /opentowns

If you like to explore and decide for yourself, this is the way to go. Use /opentowns to see a full list of towns that are public, open to new members, and ready for visitors.

You can visit any town using:

/town spawn <town name>

How to join:
If you like what you see, type:

/town join <town name>

Option 2: Ask in Server Chat

Sometimes, all it takes is asking!
Let the community know you’re looking for a town—many mayors are eager to recruit and can help you find a great fit.

Tip: Share what kind of town you’re looking for (e.g., active, peaceful, themed, PvE-focused) to get better responses.

How to join:
Once someone offers you a spot, simply type:

/town join <town name>

Option 3: Check the Discord Server

Command: /discord

Many towns advertise in our official Discord to recruit new members. Head over to the #towny-recruiting channel to see who’s looking for players like you.

Note: These towns may not be publicly accessible, so you might need to message the mayor or poster to get invited or teleported.

How to join:
Once you’re accepted or invited, use:

/town join <town name>

🔨 Create a Town

🏙️ How to Create Your Own Town

💸 Requirements

  • $10,000 to create the town
  • $5,000–$10,000 extra for land claims and initial upkeep

Step 1: Create Your Town

Stand in the location where you want your town’s spawn (homeblock) to be and enter:

/t new <town name>

Spaces are allowed, but will appear as underscores.

Note:
Your town must be at least 12 chunks away from other towns. This distance rule also applies when creating outposts or claiming new land.

Step 2: Fund Your Town

After creating your town, deposit funds to your town bank using:

/t deposit 7500

This helps cover daily upkeep, which is $15 per claimed chunk (called “townblocks”).
You can check your town size and daily upkeep anytime using:

/town

To see when taxes and upkeep are processed, type:

/towny time

The town bank is also used to buy and claim more land.

Step 3: Claim Land

Claims are made in Minecraft chunks (16×16 block areas).
To see chunk borders, press:

  • F3 + G (Windows)
  • CMD + F3 + G (Mac)

Your town starts with 1 claimed chunk (your homeblock).
To expand, stand in an adjacent chunk and type:

/t claim

Each claim costs $250.

If you can’t claim more and have enough money in the bank, you may have reached your Town Size limit (defined by town level). You can increase this by:

  • Joining a nation, or
  • Buying bonus plots:
/t buy bonus <amount>

Each bonus plot costs $500, and claiming it still costs $250.

Step 4: Create an Outpost

To claim land separate from your main town, you’ll need an outpost.
Outposts cost $15,000 and serve as teleportable sub-areas.

Stand in the chunk where you want the outpost and type:

/t claim outpost

You can continue expanding from the outpost using /t claim.

To teleport to outposts, use /t outpost.

Step 5: Set Taxes

You can charge residents a daily tax to help with upkeep. Two types:

  1. Fixed Tax (Recommended)
Everyone pays the same daily amount: /t set taxes <amount>
  2. Percentage-Based Tax
A percentage of each resident’s balance. Toggle this with: /t toggle taxpercent

Important Notes:

  • Taxes are collected when daily upkeep is withdrawn.
  • Players who can’t afford their tax are automatically removed from the town.

A plot in Towny equals one Minecraft chunk (16×16 blocks).

To view chunk borders:

  • Windows: Press F3 + G
  • Mac: Press CMD + F3 + G

To view plot info and nearby claims:

/towny map big

This will show a large map and legend, helping you identify:

  • Green $: A plot for sale in your town
  • White $: A plot for sale in another town

🛒 How to Buy a Plot

If you see a plot for sale and want to claim it:

  1. Stand on the plot.
  2. Run: /plot claim

That’s it! The plot will now belong to you.

🏦 Upkeep, Debt, & Bankruptcy

🏚️ Bankruptcy & Ruined Towns

To keep your town running, you must ensure your Town Bank has enough funds to cover daily upkeep. Fill your bank banlance with:

/town deposit <amount>

If your bank balance can’t cover the cost, your town will enter a bankrupt state, and the bank will go negative.

While bankrupt:

  • You cannot make changes to the town.
  • You must deposit enough money to bring the balance back above $0 to resume normal activity.

Your town’s maximum debt (how far into the negatives your bank can go) is calculated based on the total cost of all claimed townblocks, outposts, and plots, with an absolute cap of $100,000.

💀 Ruined Towns

If your town hits the debt cap, it will enter a “Ruined” state for 72 hours:

  • First 24 hours: The town is raidable only and cannot be reclaimed.
  • Final 48 hours: You or another town member may reclaim the town by paying $10,000 using: /t reclaim

If your town is not reclaimed during the final 48 hours, it will be permanently deleted.

🏰 Nation Upkeep & Taxes

Nation upkeep is simpler than town upkeep.

  • Your nation is charged $750 per town per day.
  • You can set a flat tax for each town in your nation using: /n set taxes <amount>

Percentage-based taxes are not available for nations—only a fixed amount can be set.
